Fan Art Friday: Mike Vanderburg

Who are you and what do you do? Mike Vanderburg, Walmart employee and proud Co-Founder with North Florida Ghostbusters-Jacksonville What’s your background? No formal background..self taught Explain what you do when you have an art idea in 100 words (or less): I sketch it out and refine my designs a few times before I have a finished product. How has your practice change over time? Hasn't really changed...I pretty much still do what I do..lol. What art do you most identify with? I like a few types..I see myself as a sketch artist and prop builder. What work do you most enjoying doing? As I do love to draw...props are my favorite type of work. Creating something from nothing is so gratifying.
What themes do you enjoy drawing most?
I love realism. Making something look like a photograph.
What’s your favourite art work?
I don't really have a direct favorite..I like so much..lol.
What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
I've worked for Walmart for the past 20 years..I am a Ghostbuster...lol.
What made you decide to pick up art/drawing?
Not really sure...it's been apart of me as long as I can remember. I've always had the natural ability to just make things or replicate what I see.
What food, drink, song inspires you?
Love me some pizza and Mtn Dew Voltage..lol. The song that inspires me most is from the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack.."On Our Own" by Bobby Brown.
What do you dislike about your work?
Probably that it doesn't always come out perfect the first time...lol.
What do you like about your work?
That it's mine..no one else's.
What research to you do?
When I want to make or design something I usually go online or look in books for a reference photo or description to use.
Name something you love, and why. Ghostbusters..because it's the only really good thing I can remember from my childhood. Name something you don’t love, and why. Peppers and onions...cause..ewww! What is your dream project? Building or restoring an actual Ecto-1. Name three artists you’d like to be compared to. Michelangelo, Leonardo, Splinter...oh wait..lol.
Do you take commissions on artwork? I have had a few offer to pay...and I've sold a few stunt props. So yes I guess...lol.
